“Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life.” Omar Khayyam
“It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy, that makes happiness.” Charles Spurgeon
For many people it often seems that the only practical ways to live a happier life are mostly achieving your goals and making your dreams come true.
Yes this does bring happiness, but it is not the only way to achieve it.
In this article I’d like to share with you my eleven ways to find happiness on daily basis. These practical ways helped me a lot to stay positive throughout the day and I sincerely hope that these ways will help you too in your daily basis.
1. Be kind to yourself.
Whenever you make a mistake don’t get angry over it and beat yourself up, be kind to yourself instead. Just focus on the positives and learn from your mistakes. See mistakes as life lessons rather than failures. Remember the saying:
“You can’t make the same mistake twice, the second time you make it, it’s a choice.”
There is no reason to dwell on what you could have done better to avoid the mistake. You can’t change the past, but you can change the future. Live in the present and focus on not repeating any of your mistakes that you once made.
2. Forgive yourself and let go of the negative things from your past.
Dwelling on an old argument, fight or thought that you could’ve done something different to not lose that one person for example is really time and energy consuming.
By living in the past you are missing on the chances you have in the present.
Realize that past is the past. It does seem too simple but really trust me. When you realize that past can’t be undone and that past is now only a memory while present or the current moment is what is real now then your regrets of what you did in the past will slowly reduce their power.
Simply realize you did the best you could at that time and that you should now focus on living in the present and doing it better in the future.
3. Stop trying to make everyone happy.
“Saying yes to happiness means learning to say no to the things and people that stress you out.” Thema Davis
Learn to say NO to people if they ask of you to do something that doesn’t seem to do any good to you. You just can’t make everyone happy. It’s close to impossible so stop trying so hard to do it if you are doing it.
Every person will want different things from you so sometimes granting them all what they want can really drain you out emotionally.
I used to try to make everyone happy myself. Each time I failed to make one of my friends satisfied I started feeling bad about myself. I started judging my self-worth.
This was really a waste of energy from my side because their unhappiness wasn’t up to me. If they really found problem in my attitude of not always fulfilling their wishes then the problem is in them and not in me since I also don’t expect everyone to do what I want.
If you want to live happier then let go of your need to please everyone and control your own life instead of theirs. This is the best practical way to live a happier life.
4. Be 10 minutes early for every occasion.
This will benefit a lot to your happiness as you will always be on time and avoid the stress of hurrying up to not be late.
Most of the negativity I got back in the days used to come from me being late to college and other meetings.
The amount of positive feelings and relaxation you can get from implementing this is huge.
5. Be grateful for what you have.
“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” Oprah Winfrey
In other words don’t take everything for granted. Many people do this.
They compare what they have with what bunch of celebrities have. Then they start feeling all sad and depressed. They should instead be grateful that they even have a roof over their head, food and glass of water. Some people don’t have those at all.
The best way for this to be done is to keep a gratitude journal where you will remind yourself of what you are grateful for. Focus on 5 or 10 things that you’re the most grateful for and write them down and also read this list whenever you’re having a hard time in your life.
This can remind you of how much you already have and that the hard time is just temporary.
6. Be kind to other people.
Helping an old lady cross the road, driving someone to a place when you see them walking there or holding the elevator or the door for some stranger are some examples of helping others.
This does not just help them. It also helps you as it makes you feel better about yourself. It also means that those people will most definitely return the favor.
7. Appreciate other people.
Instead of finding all the negatives in a certain individual, try finding positive sides instead and let them know about it.
No one is perfect and everyone has shortcomings, but also almost everyone has something good in them that you can appreciate.
It can be the way they cheer you up when you’re feeling down or the way they make you smile.
The amount of positive things people may have is somewhat endless.
8. Love and appreciate yourself.
Many people understand what it feels like to love others, but not that many try appreciating themselves as well. It’s nothing wrong with doing this and it can also be done with a journal.
Simply list all your positive attributes. Celebrate your success and don’t call yourself random names when you get angry over something. Also devote an hour or more/less of your time in doing something you truly enjoy doing.
Doing something that makes you feel good increases your happiness by a large margin.
9. Try doing something that you don’t usually do.
Check out other things that are not in your taste. Perhaps a food you never tried before or a movie you thought you wouldn’t like so you never decided to see it. This is a really fun way to find new perspectives in your life and who knows you might like what you find.
That one movie might become one of your favorites, same for food too and anything else you have in mind.
This will also expand your comfort zone little by little which is really great.
10. Surround yourself with positive people.
People are social beings. We are designed to be social and having a bunch of good and positive friends in our life automatically increases our happiness.
Friendships are what make us feel happy the most and being in a group of people who share same hobbies as you highly affects your happiness in a positive way.
Also try to reduce the time you spend with people who are mostly negative. If they try to put you down and tell you can’t achieve the goals you plan to achieve just because they seem a bit hard. Then just remind yourself of the following:
“When someone tells me “no,” it doesn’t mean I can’t do it, it simply means I can’t do it with them.” Karen E. Quinones Miller
11. Realize that happiness is your choice.
“Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.” Marcus Aurelius Antoninus
You are the one who chooses how to view yourself and therefore your life.
You choose whether you are going to think positively or negatively. Whether you will see the glass as half filled or half empty and whether you will follow these practical ways to live a happier life.
So if you decide to look on the bright side, then you can do it and this will increase your happiness.
These are your choices which then cause you to act accordingly and therefore this becomes your life. So in other words you can choose to see what happens to you in a positive way or in a negative way.
Try to find happiness in everything you do and this will build up more and more as you get used to it.
Hopefully you will use these practical ways to live a happier life because we all deserve to be happy.
